What is Gum Disease, Gingivitis?
Gum disease, including gingivitis, is a bacterial infection of the gums and tissues supporting your teeth. When teeth are not routinely brushed or flossed, the build-up of plaque and tartar can lead to gum disease, which is the leading cause of adult tooth loss.
Why is Gum Disease, Gingivitis important?
Gum disease, if left untreated, can lead to serious dental problems, including tooth loss and even serious health issues due to the penetration of bacteria into the deeper tissue pockets where bone and membrane support your teeth. Practicing good oral hygiene and visiting your dentist regularly is essential to avoid or manage gum disease.
What are the stages of Gum Disease?
There are two major stages of gum disease: gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis is a more mild form of gum disease secluded in only affecting the gums. If properly treated, it may be reversed. However, when untreated, it can progress to periodontitis, a more destructive disease stage that can lead to tooth loss and serious health problems.
What can be expected during Gum Disease Treatment?
Treatment of gum disease depends on the extent of the infection and the level of gum, teeth, tissue, and bone deterioration involved. Doctor Gustavo Gasca will perform a digital x-ray and a periodontal exam to determine the best treatment plan, including the type of treatment, number of office visits required, necessary post-treatments as your gums heal, and strategies for keeping gum disease under control after treatment is complete.
